The lowest-effort escape: barely over an hour away, no border, French-speaking home turf. A lakeside chalet on Lac Memphrémagog with a beach town, gentle mountain park, and lavender fields — everything close so nap schedules stay intact.
The winner for a toddler: shortest drive (one nap and you're there), shallow sandy lake edges, and nothing more than 20 min from the cottage. Easy grocery runs in Magog and no passport paperwork.
One of the prettiest villages in Québec, perched on the south shore of the St. Lawrence estuary. Kamouraska is about slowing right down — heritage houses, artisan bakeries and boutiques, wide tidal flats, and sunsets so famous people drive here just to watch them. A postcard-Québec change of scenery with zero rush.
Peaceful, safe and uncrowded — lovely for gentle walks and toddler bedtimes. One honest note: the St. Lawrence here is cold, salty and tidal, so it's not a swimming beach — pick a cottage with a yard or pool for water play. The ~4h30 drive is the real trade-off; break it with a lunch stop near Québec City.
The most spectacular option, hands down — the iconic Percé Rock, the gannet colony on Île Bonaventure, whales and seals off Forillon National Park, and dramatic cliffs meeting the sea. It's unforgettable… but it's also right at the far end of Québec, so be clear-eyed about the drive.
The scenery is world-class, but at ~9 hours each way this is a big ask for a 2-year-old on a 4-day trip: two full days in the car leaves barely two days there. It really shines as a 5–7 day trip. If you love it, consider saving Gaspésie for a longer holiday — or pick one of the closer options for this long weekend.
The best of both worlds: base yourselves in a quiet lakeside chalet in Gatineau Park / Wakefield, then dip into the capital whenever you feel like it. Shallow sandy park beaches for the little one, world-class museums for a rainy afternoon, and Parliament, the Rideau Canal and ByWard Market all about 30 minutes from the cottage door.
Arguably the most well-rounded pick: an easy ~2h drive, shallow sandy beaches in Gatineau Park, and a built-in rainy-day / nap plan B with the Museum of Nature and the Children's Museum. You get real sightseeing without giving up cottage calm. Reserve a Gatineau Park beach day-pass ahead on summer weekends.
The trade of a longer drive for arguably the best kid beach anywhere near you: Sandbanks' huge freshwater dunes with water that stays shallow and warm for a very long way out. Add relaxed wineries, farm stands and cider for the grown-ups.
Sandbanks' shallow, warm, sandy water is about as good as it gets for a 2-year-old. The catch is the ~4-hour drive — best split around a long nap or a lunch stop. No passport, so the drive is the only real hurdle. Book park entry and cottage early — it's a popular long weekend.

With a 2-year-old in the mix, the shortest drive and easy swimming make the Eastern Townships the safest bet for a genuinely restful long weekend. Want a little more to do? Ottawa & Gatineau Park is the best all-rounder — a short drive, sandy lake beaches, and city sights with museums for a rainy day. Prince Edward County is worth the drive purely for that beach, and Kamouraska wins on postcard Québec charm. Gaspésie is stunning but best saved for a week — not four days.
